Medical Herbalist

Mrs J. Wilby RGN.NDN.MNIMH

What is Herbal Medicine?

Herbal Medicine is the original natural medicine. Plant medicines have been used for thousands of years and every region or country in the world has either used herbal medicines or still does.

Today over 80% of the world's population relies on herbs as the main source of their medicine.

In Britain, herbal medicine was the main form of medicine as recently as the 19th and early 20th centuries. It's popularity is increasing again. Public surveys have shown that it is the most used complementary medicine in Britain today.

Modern herbal medicine combines ancient traditional knowledge with the latest scientific findings about plant medicines and health.

The professional body of Medical Herbalists (Phytotherapists) is the National Institute of Medical Heralists.

Members of the Institute have either MNIMH or FNIMH after their names. Entry to the institute may only be gained following successsful completion of four years training. Members are bound by a strict code of professional ethics and conduct.

The Herbalists Approach

Herbalists use similar diagnostic skills to orthodox doctors but take a more holistic approach. They are more concerned to identify and treat the underlying causes of any disease than to treat the symtoms alone. The aim of the treatment is to promote healing and general health by restoring balance and harmony to the whole body.

Your First Consultation

The first appointment will take about 40 minutes during which your problem will be fully investigated by discussion and examination. A detailed history will be taken, building up a picture of how previous illness and lifestyle may be affecting your present health. The efficiency of each body system such as lungs, digestion and circulation will also be assessed.

A herbal approach to treatment will be formulated and any adjustments to diet, lifestyle and exercise considered beneficial will be explained.

  Follow Up Visits

Allow 20 minutes for each. The number and frequency depend on the needs of each patient. It is common to have a second visit after two weeks, but then visits at monthly intervals are usual. A typical course of herbal treatment may require two to five visits.

Herbal Treatment

Herbal prescriptions are designed specifically for each patient. You may be prescribed a liquid medicine (tincture) based on extracts of one or more plant, a cream made from oils and plants extracts, or be given a mix of dried herbs to drink as a tea.

Your prescription may be modified at each visit as your condition improves. This is a normal part of herbal treatment, where your medicine is designed to match your body's improving condition and needs.

Our Aim

To provide a professional and caring environment for the practise and supply of herbal medicines under the supervision of Qualified Medical Herbalists.
