What is a Dropped Foot ?
A dropped foot
is when you are unable to lift the foot up from the
ankle. This results in catching the toes, tripping and
the need to lift the leg higher from the hip during
walking. This can make walking effortful and unsteady
One of the most effective methods
of managing a dropped foot is with the use of a dropped
foot stimulator. The Royal College of Physicians have
recommended this treatment in the National Clinical
Guidelines for Stroke but it is also of great benefit
to foot drop sufferers from other upper motor neuron
lesions for example, M. S and Head Injury. This evidenced-based
treatment has been extensively researched and articles
can be viewed at www.salisburyfes.com.
What Is A Dropped Foot Stimulator ?
The dropped
foot stimulator is a device which activates the nerve
to allow the foot to lift during walking. It comprises
of a small box about the size of a pack of cards which
discretely fits onto the waistband. Leads connect the
stimulator to two electrodes on the shin and a switch
under the insole of the shoe. The switch is pressure
sensitive and triggers the foot to lift to clear the
floor as you take a step. The stimulator is comfortable
to use and can be worn with all your normal clothing
and footwear

or other walking aids

The clinic is run by a chartered physiotherapist
with over 10 years experience in Neurological Rehabilitation,
who has undergone training in the use of functional
electrical stimulation. She has now become a qualified
practitioner in the assessment and provision of the
foot drop stimulator.
Previously clients in the North West region could only
access this service by travelling to clinics in Birmingham
or Salisbury.
On referral to the clinic you will
be given an initial assessment to determine if you respond
well to the stimulation. If it is felt to be of benefit
a stimulator can be ordered and programmed for your
individual specific needs. You would be instructed in
how to apply the stimulator independently to ensure
safe and effective use. It is recommended that you attend
the clinic at regular intervals for monitoring and you
can always contact the clinic if any questions / problems
arise.
If the stimulator is not appropriate
you will be assessed for the suitability of other lightweight
ankle supports/splints available to make your walking
as easy and efficient as possible. You may also be advised
regarding suitable home exercises and if any follow
up physiotherapy treatment would be beneficial.
If you would
like to discuss the suitability of a stimulator for
yourself or require any further information, please
do not hesitate to contact the clinic.
